• Prepare for Measurement — Ensure the patient is seated comfortably with their back supported and feet flat on the floor. Remove tight clothing from the upper arm. Wrap the adult latex-free cuff snugly around the bare upper arm, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the elbow crease, aligning the artery indicator.
• Inflate the Cuff — Place the stethoscope earpieces in your ears. Position the stethoscope diaphragm over the brachial artery pulse point. Close the air release valve on the bulb by turning it clockwise. Rapidly inflate the cuff by squeezing the bulb until the gauge reads about 30 mmHg above the expected systolic pressure.
• Deflate and Record — Slowly open the air release valve by turning it counter-clockwise to deflate the cuff at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per second. Listen carefully for the first distinct tapping sound (systolic pressure) and the point at which the sounds disappear (diastolic pressure). Record these values.
