How do I choose the right MERV rating for my air handler?

MERV 13 filters, like these from Filterbuy, capture 98% of fine particles including dust, smoke, and allergens, making them suitable for homes with respiratory sensitivities. For systems with lower airflow capacity, always verify your HVAC manual recommends MERV 13 to avoid restricting air flow. MERV 8 is a common choice for general household dust.

How do I pick the correct air filter size?

Measure your existing filter or the filter slot in your HVAC system for length, width, and thickness. These Filterbuy filters are nominally 16x20x1 inches, with an actual size of 15.50" x 19.50" x 0.75" (39.6 cm x 49.5 cm x 1.9 cm). Always confirm the actual dimensions fit your slot to ensure a proper seal and optimal performance.

What is the best MERV 13 air filter for smoke and allergies?

Filterbuy's 16x20x1 MERV 13 electrostatic pleated air filters are highly effective for smoke and allergy defense. They capture 98% of fine particles, including smoke, dander, pollen, and bacteria, without significantly impacting airflow. The durable construction and long-lasting media make them a reliable choice for cleaner indoor air.

How often should I replace my 16x20x1 MERV 13 air filter?

For optimal performance and air quality, it is recommended to replace these Filterbuy MERV 13 filters every 90 days. The electrostatically charged media lasts up to three times longer than fiberglass models, but regular replacement ensures continued efficiency in capturing dust, smoke, and allergens.

Can I use these Filterbuy air filters in my central AC?

Yes, these Filterbuy 16x20x1 MERV 13 air filters are designed for universal compatibility with most central AC units, furnaces, heat pumps, and HVAC systems. Ensure the filter slot matches the nominal size of 16x20x1 inches and verify your system can handle MERV 13 filtration.

Who It's For vs. Who Should Skip

Ideal for homes with central AC, imported HVAC units, or anyone seeking enhanced indoor air quality, especially those with respiratory sensitivities like asthma. Perfect for capturing smoke, dander, and pollen. Skip if your HVAC system is not compatible with 16x20x1 filters or if it has very low airflow capacity that might be restricted by MERV 13 media; consult your system manual for compatible MERV ratings.

How to use

Locate Filter Slot — Find the filter slot on your furnace, air conditioner, or HVAC system. It's typically located on the return air duct or the unit itself. Ensure the system is powered off before proceeding.
Identify Airflow Direction — Observe the arrows printed on the frame of the Filterbuy air filter. These arrows indicate the direction of airflow. Ensure the arrows point in the direction the air flows into your system (usually towards the furnace/AC unit).
Install New Filter — Remove the old filter and slide the new 16x20x1 MERV 13 filter into the slot, aligning it with the airflow direction. Ensure it fits snugly to prevent air bypass. Dispose of the old filter properly.
Replace Regularly — For optimal performance and air quality, replace the filter every 90 days. Mark your calendar or set a reminder to ensure consistent protection against dust, smoke, and allergens.
