What reed strength should a beginner alto saxophonist buy?

Beginners typically start with a strength 2 or 2.5 alto sax reed, which is easier to blow and produces sound with less embouchure control. As your lip strength develops you can move up to 3 or 3.5 for a fuller, more focused tone. Match the strength to your mouthpiece — wider tip openings pair with softer reeds. The Vandoren V16 Strength 2 is a good starting point for many.

Are cane or synthetic alto sax reeds better?

Cane reeds deliver a traditional warm, responsive tone favoured for classical and jazz playing, though each reed plays slightly differently. Synthetic reeds play consistently from the first note, need no wetting, and hold up well in humid or fluctuating climates — a strong option for outdoor gigs and marching use. Many players keep both for different settings. Vandoren V16 are traditional cane reeds.

What is the difference between Vandoren V16 and Traditional reeds?

Vandoren V16 reeds have a thicker tip and a longer palette compared to Traditional Vandoren reeds, resulting in a more brilliant and percussive sound. The V16 also features a medium-thick heart, offering a different resistance profile that suits modern jazz and new music styles.

How do I store Vandoren V16 reeds to ensure freshness?

Each Vandoren V16 reed is sealed in an individual 'Flow Pack' to maintain freshness. For optimal longevity, store unused reeds in a sealed reed guard with a two-way humidity control pack. This helps prevent them from drying out or becoming too moist, preserving their playability.

Why choose this product

Vandoren V16: The Sound of Modern Jazz

Vandoren V16 reeds are engineered for musicians seeking a brighter, more percussive sound than traditional reeds. Their unique design, featuring a thicker tip and longer palette, allows for greater projection and articulation, making them a favorite for contemporary jazz and experimental music. Imported directly from authorized US retailers, these reeds guarantee authenticity and quality, ensuring you get the genuine Vandoren experience. Unlike locally sourced alternatives that may vary in consistency, the V16 offers a predictable and superior tonal performance, backed by the brand's legacy in woodwind innovation.

Who Should Choose V16 Reeds?

These reeds are ideal for alto saxophone players, particularly those in modern jazz, fusion, or contemporary music genres, who desire a brilliant, cutting, and percussive tone. Players who prefer a reed with a bit more resistance than JAVA but less than a traditional cut will find the V16 a perfect fit. If you are sensitive to humidity fluctuations affecting cane reeds, consider synthetic alternatives. For those seeking a consistent, high-performance reed with a distinct tonal character, the V16 is an excellent choice.

How to use

Select and Prepare Reed — Carefully remove one Vandoren V16 reed from its Flow Pack. If it feels dry, moisten the tip for 30-60 seconds in purified water or with a reed soak solution to ensure optimal flexibility and tone.
Attach Reed to Mouthpiece — Place the flat side of the reed against the mouthpiece table, aligning the tip with the end of the mouthpiece. Secure it firmly but gently with the ligature, ensuring it is centered and not overtightened.
Test and Adjust — Play a few notes to test the reed's response. If it feels too stiff or too soft, minor adjustments to ligature pressure or reed placement might help. If issues persist, try another reed from the pack.
