• Prepare the Solution — In a well-ventilated area, carefully dissolve a small amount of liver of sulfur lumps (start with 1-2 grams) into approximately 250 ml of hot water. Stir until fully dissolved. Use a glass or ceramic container, not metal.
• Apply to Metal — Submerge your clean silver, copper, or brass object into the solution. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, checking the patina development. For lighter applications, you can brush the solution onto the metal surface.
• Rinse and Neutralize — Once the desired black patina is achieved, remove the metal from the solution and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Neutralize any residual sulfur by rinsing with a baking soda and water solution, then rinse again with clean water.
• Finish and Protect — Gently dry the metal with a soft cloth. You can then polish the raised areas to reveal the underlying metal, creating contrast, or apply a protective sealant or lacquer to preserve the patina's finish.
